Porters of Darjeeling

Excess Baggage

The hill stations in India have their peculiarities, created by the British to escape the heat of the Indian Summer. They get super busy in the summer months with tourists coming in hoards putting ever more pressure on the stretched resources and infrastructure.

This photo essay is my tribute to the porters of Darjeeling. Their usual day starts early at 6am, when the fresh goods from the plains arriving into the main bazaar need to be shifted to the various sellers. It only ends when there is sufficient money in the pocket to call it a day.

You will see them everywhere, they make you realize that the price of anything is the amount of life you exchange for it.

  1. Its like you read my mind! You seem to know so much about this, like you wrote the book in it or something.

I think that you could do with a few pics to drive the message
home a little bit, but instead of that, this is fantastic
blog. An excellent read. I’ll certainly be back.
